Monforte de Lemos, tucked into the Ribeira Sacra region of Galicia is a historic town surrounded by vineyards, medieval architecture, and lush green landscapes — and the best part is, you can enjoy most of it without spending a cent. Here’s everything we did for free on our trip to this gorgeous town.

ToggleWander the Old Town & Jewish Quarter
Monforte’s old town is a maze of narrow streets, stone houses, and centuries‑old charm. The former Jewish Quarter (Barrio Judío) is especially atmospheric with it’s hidden corners and small plazas. Take the time to stroll through Rua Abelardo Baanante where the Jewish families once lived.
Our tip is to go early in the morning for quiet streets and a real sense of local life.

Monastery of San Vicente del Pino
Perched on a hill overlooking the town, this monastery is one of Monforte’s most iconic landmarks. You can explore the exterior, wander the grounds, and enjoy sweeping views of the valley below. Be sure to check out the impressive stone façade and the panoramic viewpoint beside the monastery.
Its only a 10-15 minute walk from Praza de Espana. Head toward the Puente Vejo (Old Bridge) and follow the signs for ‘Monasterio Castelo’. The final stretch is a big uphill, but it’s a steady climb rather than a tough hike.

Castle of Monforte (Castelo de San Vicente)
Right next to the monastery sits the medieval castle tower which dates back to the 12th century. Unfortunately, while only parts of the original structure remain, the ‘Torre de Homenaxa (the keep) still stand. The viewpoint from here is amazing, you can see the green Ribeira Sacra landscape, vineyards and the rooftops of Monforte.
You can walk the fortress and the keep free of charge. There is a hotel next to it that occupies the monastery and palace buildings but not the actual fortress tower. We stuck our heads into the hotel so see the beautiful original architecture.

Cabe River
The Cabe River runs through the heart of Monforte, offering peaceful walking paths, charming bridges, and plenty of spots to sit and relax. We started near the Puente Viejo, the old stone bridge, from here the riverside paths stretch in both directions and fully shaded by trees so you can take either direction. We followed the river and passed small parks, quiet residential streets and enjoyed seeing all the architecture of Monforte’s impressive buildings. We ended the stroll by popping into a local supermarket (supermercado) to grab some baguettes and ham for lunch.

Ponte Velle
This 16th‑century stone bridge which connects the historic centre with the Cabe riverside paths is one of Monforte’s most photographed spots and we could see why. It’s especially beautiful at sunset when the warm light reflects off the water.

Pazo de Tor
Pazo de Tor is an absolute gem. Entry is completely free, and that even includes a guided tour—something you don’t often find at historic estates. Inside, you’ll wander through an impressive old library, a striking baroque staircase, four beautifully preserved rooms, and a small but fascinating collection of 14th‑ and 15th‑century armour.
The manor itself dates back to the late 18th century and sits about 8 km outside the town, making it an easy and inexpensive side trip. We loved the guided tour; it’s one of those rare experiences where you walk away thinking, “I can’t believe that didn’t cost anything.”

Visit the Church of Santa María da Régoa
This small but beautiful church is free to enter and offers a peaceful moment of reflection. Its simple Galician architecture is a nice contrast to the grand monastery on the hill and a welcoming break from the heat!
If you’re wandering through Monforte’s hilltop complex, you’ll find the church just a short walk from the monastery and castle.

Mercado de Abastos
Monforte’s weekly market which takes place on Wednesday’s from 9am-2pm is located in the old town and is a lively mix of fresh produce, local cheeses, handmade goods, and Galician specialties. Even if you’re not buying, it’s a great cultural experience plus, when we visited the vendors all offered delicious samples of their goods – especially cheese!

Discover the Ribeira Sacra Viewpoints
While not technically inside the town, several breathtaking viewpoints are just a short drive away. We visited three free viewpoints near Monforte being Miradoiro de Pena do Castelo, Miradoiro de Santiorxo and Miradoiro de A Cividade which offered some of the most stunning landscapes in northern Spain.

Monforte de Lemos is proof that some of the best travel experiences don’t cost anything at all. From medieval architecture to natural beauty, this Galician town is a paradise for budget travellers who want authentic culture without the crowds.
