FREE things to do in Cesky Krumlov, Czech Republic

Visiting Český Krumlov really is like stepping into a fairytale. Tucked into a bend of the Vltava River, this tiny South Bohemian town is all cobblestone lanes, crooked medieval rooftops, and that fairytale castle you’ve probably seen on Instagram and assumed was out of your price range. Spoiler: it’s not. Below we share all the free things we did on our visit to this gorgeous town and you can check out our guide on how to get to Cesky Krumlov on a budget here.

Wander the Old Town

The UNESCO‑listed centre is completely pedestrian‑only which makes wandering its maze of cobblestone lanes, Renaissance houses, and river viewpoints even more enjoyable. The main square, Náměstí Svornosti, is a postcard‑perfect medieval plaza lined with colourful facades and anchored by a historic plague column. It’s also a great place to slow down, window‑shop at the traditional stores and watch locals go about their day.

If you can, arrive early to enjoy the quiet before the crowds roll in. Honestly, one of the best things you can do here is simply roam the streets and soak up the charm of the buildings around you.

Climb the Castle Courtyards

The castle complex is second largest in the Czech Republic, and while the interior tours cost money, the courtyards and sweeping viewpoints are completely free. You can wander through multiple levels, each offering a different angle of the town’s red rooftops and the looping Vltava River.

Don’t miss the ‘Cloak Bridge’, a massive multi-story structure that looks like something right out of a fantasy novel. Once you’re there you can peek into the castle moat – yes there are bears and yes they are real though whether you spot them depends on the day.

We also enjoyed and highly recommend strolling through the 17th century baroque style castle gardens which you access by walking through the castle. From the gatehouse there are two scenic paths, the left-hand route gently winds it’s way toward the main entrance of the garden, the path to the right takes you past the Winter Riding School.

Visit the Church of St Vitus

Just a few steps away from the bustle of Old Town is the Church of St. Vitus—its tall spire peeking above the rooftops long before you get anywhere near the doors. Stepping inside is completely free, and the moment you do, the 15th‑century history hits in the best way: stone pillars soaring overhead, ornate altars and rows of worn wooden pews that have clearly seen generations come and go.

What we loved most though was how alive the place still feels. During our visit we saw locals drifting in to light candles and a small choir rehearsing.

Hike up to the Cross Hill (Krizova Hora)

If you’ve got a little extra time in Český Krumlov, add a hike up to Cross Hill to your list. It’s only about a 20–25 minute walk from the town centre though be ready for a steady uphill climb of roughly 130 m (425 ft). There are two ways up: from the P3 parking lot or straight from town via the red trail. Either way, you’re rewarded with a gorgeous bird’s‑eye view over the town, the castle, and the rolling Bohemian Forest.

At the top, you’ll find the Chapel of Our Lady of Sorrows and the Holy Cross. The chapel itself isn’t open to visitors but honestly, the panoramic views are the real highlight and absolutely worth the climb.

Stroll along the Vltava River

Strolling along the Vltava River is one of the most peaceful ways to experience Český Krumlov. The banks just below the castle offer some of the best panoramic views of the town, with its cluster of orange rooftops and the charming lanes of the Latran neighborhood spilling toward the water. There are plenty of benches lining the river, making it easy to relax and simply take in the scenery.

We visited in winter, but in the warmer months you can enjoy canoeing on the water.
