It’s no secret that we as budget travellers have a soft spot for Bali. Over the years, wandering across the Island of the Gods, we’ve made it our mission to uncover the neighbourhoods where your money stretches further without losing any of the island’s magic.
Below are the areas where we’ve found the perfect blend of affordability, atmosphere, and easy access to everything that makes Bali so unforgettable.
Ubud: Culture and Nature without the Price Tag
Ubud is one of our favourite places in Bali. Set in the island’s central highlands about 35 kilometres from the capital, it’s surrounded by emerald rice terraces, river valleys and dense rainforest. The town is rich with traditional markets, cultural landmarks, temples and wellness retreats, offering a peaceful alternative to the lively coastal hubs of Kuta and Seminyak.
Ubud is full of inexpensive homestays run by local families. You can wake up to jungle or rice terrace views for the price of a hostel bed elsewhere. We spent a few nights in a homestay overlooking a ravine where the soundtrack was cicadas and distant gamelan. It cost less than a hotel room in central Ubud and we could still walk or scooter into town for temples, markets and dance performances.

Vibe: lush, artsy, spiritual
Why it’s great for budget travellers: home stays with breakfast included, cheap yoga classes, free nature walks including Campuhan Ridge Walk and the Kajeng Rice Field Walk and affordable local food.
Kuta: Classic Backpacker Budget Hub
Kuta, located just north of the Ngurah Rai International Airport and adjacent to the coastal areas of Legian and Seminyak still offers some of the cheapest accomodation on the island.
Kuta has long been Bali’s go‑to spot for travellers watching their wallets and it still delivers some of the best value on the island. Yes, it’s busy and full of energy — but that’s part of its charm. If you’re after affordable accommodation, endless cheap eats and a beach that’s perfect for beginner surfers, Kuta is hard to beat.
We’ve stayed in everything from simple homestays to small hotels here, all within walking distance of the beach. The area is incredibly convenient with markets, malls, nightlife and transport options everywhere you turn. It’s a great choice if you want to be right in the action without stretching your budget.
Best for: party-goers, surfers, first-timers and those travellers who want energy and low prices
Vibe: chaotic, lively, loud, fun

Legian: Classic Budget Beach Vibes
If you love being close to the buzz without paying premium prices, Legian is a fantastic middle ground. Sitting between Kuta and Seminyak, it offers the best of both worlds: lively streets, plenty of cheap eats and a long stretch of beach perfect for sunset strolls. What surprised us most is how many affordable guesthouses and small hotels are tucked just a few minutes away from the main road.
Legian is ideal if you want easy access to nightlife and shopping but still appreciate a quieter place to sleep at night. It’s also incredibly walkable, which helps keep transport costs down — always a win for budget travellers.

Vibe: lively, central, fun
Why it’s great for budget travellers: tons of budget hotels and hostels, cheaper than Seminyak but cleaner and calmer than Kuta, easy beach access, affordable bars and restaurants and walkable streets.
Seminyak: Stylish, Social and still Affordable on the Right Streets
Seminyak, located north of Legian and Kuta is known for it’s boutique hotels and beach clubs, but it also has plenty of hidden budget gems, especially if you stay slightly inland.
What we love about Seminyak is the balance: you get trendy cafés, lively bars, beautiful beaches and endless shopping, all within walking distance. It’s perfect if you want a slightly more polished vibe while still keeping your daily spend in check.

Why it’s great for budget travellers: cheap eats in side-street warungs, affordable guesthouses just minutes from the beach and a walkable neighbourhood.
Sanur: Calm, Affordable and Perfect for Long Stays
Sanur is one of Bali’s best budget-friendly coastal area that’s only 17 kilometres from Ngurah Rai International Airport and less hectic than nearby Kuta, Legian and Seminyak.
Sanur feels like Bali’s gentle exhale. It’s quieter than the west coast, with a long beachfront path perfect for sunrise walks. What surprised us most was how many budget-friendly stays are tucked along its leafy streets.
We found a family-run homestay where the owner insisted we try her homemade banana pancakes every morning. The beach was a five‑minute stroll away, and the calm water made it a perfect base for swimming or hopping on a boat to Nusa Penida.
Perfect For: older travellers, families, long-stay and those who want a perfect beach base
Vibe: relaxed, traditional, beachy
Why it’s great for budget travellers: plenty of mid-range and budget hotels, cheap beachfront cafes, easy access to nusa Penida and Lembongan.
Canggu: (but not that Canggu)
Perfect for: surfers chasing waves without the crowds and food lovers who appreciate affordable warungs
Vibe: trendy, boho-surf, trendy
Why it’s great for budget travellers: easy access to beaches without beachfront prices, cheap local eateries hidden between the rice paddies and affordable homestays.
Sideman: Rice Terraces without the Tourist Markup
Sideman feels like Ubud before tourism exploded – lush rice terraces, quiet villages and warm local hospitality. Located just an hour from Ubud, it’s dominated by stunning views of Mount Agung, an active volcano and known for it’s dramatic river valleys and traditional village life.
Our homestay overlooked a valley so green it didn’t look real. The family who ran it invited us to join them for a temple ceremony and we ended up spending the evening wrapped in a borrowed sarong, sipping sweet tea and feeling like we’d stumbled into a Bali that most travellers never see.

Vibe: peaceful, rural, scenic
Why it’s perfect for budget travellers: affordable eco-lodges and homestays, cheap local food, free hikes and nature walks.
Uluwatu: Clifftop views on a budget
Uluwatu is known for its dramatic limestone cliffs, world‑class surf breaks, and the iconic cliff‑top Uluwatu Temple overlooking the Indian Ocean. It’s also famous for hidden white‑sand beaches, breathtaking sunsets and the traditional Kecak fire dance performed at sunset.
Although Uluwatu is famous for it’s luxury villas, budget travellers can absolutely stay here. The area is dotted with simple bungalows, surf lodges and affordable guesthouses with incredible views.

Vibe: scenic, laid-back, surf-centric
Why it’s great for budget travellers: affordable warungs, sunset spots that cost nothing to enjoy, cheap homestays and free beaches (though some do charge a small entrance fee).
The island’s hospitality shines brightest in its smaller guesthouses and homestays, where your money supports local families and your stay feels personal.
